Overview
Bird brings customer messaging into Attio. Send SMS, WhatsApp and email from a person record, or reach the people associated with a company, deal or lead. Select multiple people to compose an SMS or email once and send it to each recipient.
Add a person, or a whole selection of people, to a Bird audience from their record, or as a step in a workflow. Bird matches or creates the contact from the person's email address and phone number, and sets the contact's name from the person's when it creates one, so nobody handles a Bird contact ID.
Use Bird in Attio Workflows to automate SMS, WhatsApp and email sends. Start workflows when messages arrive, delivery succeeds or fails, or recipients open or click an email.
Add the Bird conversation widget to your records to read recent messages alongside your CRM data, including messages sent through other Bird tools. Open a message to compose a response. With a conversation mailbox configured, you can also read received email and reply in its thread.
How it works
Connect your Attio workspace to a Bird workspace. For record actions, the app reads a person's name, phone number and email address from Attio to prepare the recipient. On company, deal and lead records, it resolves the linked people. A record's own email address can be used when no linked person has one. Messages are sent through your connected Bird workspace.
Choose Compose SMS, Compose WhatsApp or Compose email from a record's actions. SMS and email also have bulk actions on a selection of people. The WhatsApp dialog offers approved templates and allows a text reply when the customer service window is open. In Attio Workflows, add a Bird send step and supply the recipient details and message content from your workflow.
Choose Add to Bird audience from a person's actions, or Add selected to Bird audience on a selection, and pick the audience. Bird matches an existing contact on the person's email address or phone number, and creates one from that address, phone number and name when none matches. It stores the contact it linked on the person in two attributes it creates the first time you use the action, bird_contact_id and bird_workspace_id, so a later email change still finds the same contact. Nothing else is written to your records, and clearing both attributes unlinks the person.
Use the SMS events, WhatsApp events and Email events triggers to respond to messaging activity automatically. Choose the events that start your workflow, then use each event's branch and available variables to configure the next steps.
The Bird conversation widget matches the record's resolved phone number and email address to recent Bird messages. It shows message text where available, plus channel, direction, status, time and email subject. SMS and WhatsApp include inbound and outbound messages. Email includes sent messages and, when you configure a conversation mailbox, matching messages from that mailbox. Open a row to compose a response or reply to a received email in its thread. Conversation rows, including message text, are cached in Attio app storage for up to 60 seconds; message bodies are not written to record attributes.
A workflow trigger makes an event's fields available to the steps that follow. Received SMS and WhatsApp events include message text and the counterparty's phone number. Your workflow determines whether those fields are stored in Attio records.
Configure
You need a Bird account with a workspace configured for the channels you want to use, and an Attio workspace admin to connect the app.
Install Bird in Attio and connect your Bird account through the app's workspace connection. Select the Bird workspace your team will use.
Open the app's settings and enter your default senders for the channels you use. These must be senders configured for use in Bird. Use Test connection to check the connection.
Leave the phone and email attribute settings empty to use Attio's standard attributes, or enter the custom attribute slugs used by your workspace.
Add the Bird conversation widget to the people record page through Configure page > Add Widget.
To show received email and reply in its thread, set Conversation mailbox to the Bird mailbox ID your team uses. Record viewers can read matching messages from that mailbox through the widget.
In Attio Workflows, add Bird send steps or choose an SMS events, WhatsApp events or Email events trigger and select the events you want to act on.
Members can use Edit my senders to set their own sender defaults. Admins can also configure senders for other members.
The app keeps your default senders and each member's senders in Attio's storage for as long as it is installed, and briefly caches the widget's activity rows and the audience list it offers. Each activated trigger registers one webhook endpoint in your Bird workspace and releases it when you turn the trigger off.
