## **What are standard objects?**

Standard objects are built-in objects provided by Attio. Because Attio understands the purpose of these objects, each one comes with a predefined set of attributes. Some are enabled by default, while others can be enabled as needed based on your use case. Standard objects include **Companies**, **People**, **Deals**, **Users**, and **Workspaces**. Admins and members with Full access to an object can [configure access to objects](https://attio.com/help/reference/managing-your-data/objects/manage-access-to-objects). Deals, Users, and Workspaces can be renamed to match your team's terminology.

> For a video walkthrough, see **Standard Objects** in Attio Academy.

When your data doesn’t fit into one of the standard objects, you can [create a custom object](https://attio.com/help/reference/managing-your-data/objects/create-and-manage-custom-objects).

For help choosing the right objects and understanding how they work with lists and views, see [Define your data model: objects, lists, and views](https://attio.com/help/reference/attio-101/attios-data-model/define-your-data-model-objects-lists-and-views).

> **Note: **Object limits depend on your Attio plan: 3 on Free, 5 on Plus, 12 on Pro, and unlimited on Enterprise. Companies** **and People** **objects** **count toward these limits. [Learn more about plans and pricing.](https://attio.com/pricing)

## **Companies and People standard objects**

When you [sync your email and calendar](https://attio.com/help/reference/email-calendar/email-and-calendar-syncing), the Companies and People objects will populate automatically with the people and companies records you’ve emailed or met with in the past:

- **Companies**: Every business or organization your team has interacted with, usually identified by a domain
- **People**: Every individual your team has interacted with, usually identified by an email address

People and Companies objects also include additional features:

- [Enriched attributes](https://attio.com/help/reference/managing-your-data/enriched-data): Attio automatically enriches person and company records with useful data points like logos and profile pictures, social media handles, and descriptions.
- [Email syncing](https://attio.com/help/reference/email-calendar/email-and-calendar-syncing): When you sync your email and calendar, Attio automatically creates person and company records for everyone you’ve emailed or had calendar events with (with default settings).
- [Communication intelligence](https://attio.com/help/reference/managing-your-data/enriched-data#communication-intelligence): With email and calendar sync, you can use communication intelligence attributes like **Last interaction** to see at a glance when interactions are taking place, and with whom

### **Companies system attributes**

The Companies object includes the system attributes listed in the table below. Attributes marked as "enriched" are [automatically populated by Attio when possible](https://attio.com/help/reference/managing-your-data/enriched-data).

System attributes on Companies are not editable: their names, configuration, and options (for select and multi-select attributes) cannot be changed. Some attributes also have values assigned by Attio that you cannot modify; these are marked "values not editable" in the table.

To create additional custom attributes on Companies, see [Create and manage attributes](https://attio.com/help/reference/managing-your-data/attributes/create-manage-attributes).

> **Note:** Some attributes are only available on select plans. [Learn more about plans and pricing](https://attio.com/pricing).

## **Users standard object**

The Users standard object is useful for tracking information about the users of your own product (such as a SaaS product), including the person and workspace records they are connected to.

If it's not enabled by default, admins can [enable Users in Workspace settings](https://attio.com/help/reference/managing-your-data/objects/manage-standard-objects#enable-a-standard-object). Learn more about when you should use the Users object and how to bring in data in [Define your data model: objects, lists, and views](https://attio.com/help/reference/attio-101/attios-data-model/define-your-data-model-objects-lists-and-views).

## **Workspaces standard object**

The Workspaces standard object is useful for tracking information about accounts using your product (such as a SaaS product), including connected users of your product and their companies.

If it's not enabled by default, admins can [enable Workspaces in Workspace settings](https://attio.com/help/reference/managing-your-data/objects/manage-standard-objects#enable-a-standard-object). Learn more about when you should use the Workspaces object and how to bring in data in [Define your data model: objects, lists, and views](https://attio.com/help/reference/attio-101/attios-data-model/define-your-data-model-objects-lists-and-views).

### Workspaces system attributes

The Workspaces object includes the following system attributes. Workspaces system attributes are not editable, so the names, options (for select or multi-select attributes), and configuration cannot be changed.

### **Suggested custom attributes for Workspaces**

To create additional custom attributes on Workspaces, see [Create and manage attributes](https://attio.com/help/reference/managing-your-data/attributes/create-manage-attributes). The following are common custom attributes for Workspaces:

- Plan / Product
- Subscription dates
- Sign up date
- Sign up source
- Payment and billing information
- MRR / ARR
- Number of seats / users
- Product usage data (this will be specific to your product and its features)
- Log in data (unique log ins last 7 / 30 / 90 days, last log in date)
- First / last UTM source

You can also [pull in data from any associated record](https://attio.com/help/reference/managing-your-data/views/create-and-manage-table-views#display-attributes#display,-filter,-and-sort-by-attributes-linked-via-relationships) using relationship attributes. For example, in any view of workspaces, you can add information about the associated users or company.

## **Enable a standard object**

Admins can enable a standard object by following these steps:

- Click your workspace name in the top-left corner.
- Select **Workspace settings** from the dropdown.
- In the left sidebar, click **Objects**.
- Click **Activate** next to the standard object you want to use.

![Data page showing list of objects highlighting option to activate users standard object](https://a.storyblok.com/f/234930/2169x1374/7bd7f1eb15/activate-standard-object.png)

## Rename a standard object

Admins and members with Full access to the object can rename the Deals, Users, and Workspaces objects so they match the language your team already uses. For example, if your team calls deals "opportunities," you can rename the Deals object to Opportunities. The Companies and People objects can't be renamed.

Every object has a plural noun and a singular noun, and Attio uses both throughout the product. Renaming an object updates how it's labeled wherever it appears.

To rename a standard object:

1. Click your workspace name in the top-left corner.
2. Select **Workspace settings** from the dropdown.
3. In the left sidebar, click **Objects**.
4. Select **Deals**, **Users**, or **Workspaces**.
5. Open the **Configuration** tab.
6. Under **General**, enter the new **Plural noun** and **Singular noun**.
7. Optionally, click the icon to the left of the **Plural noun** field to choose a new object icon or color.

Your changes apply across the workspace.

> **Note:** Renaming an object changes its display name only. The object's slug can't be changed, so record URLs and any API integrations that reference the object keep working.

## **Deactivate a standard object**

Admins and members with Full access to the object can deactivate a standard object by following these steps:

- Click your workspace name in the top-left corner.
- Select **Workspace settings** from the dropdown, or **Account settings** if you're not an admin.
- In the left sidebar, click **Objects**.
- Select the standard object you want to deactivate.
- Click **Deactivate object**.

Note that it’s not possible to deactivate the **Companies** or **People** objects.

Deactivating a standard object will hide its records, data, and views. Any associated lists will be permanently deleted.

## **Manage object attributes**

You can create and manage attributes for your objects, which will hold data you want to track about your records. To manage an object’s attributes, open the **Attributes** tab on the object’s page within **Workspace settings**. [Learn more about creating and managing attributes](https://attio.com/help/reference/managing-your-data/attributes/create-manage-attributes).

You can also customize which attributes are shown when creating a new record for a particular object. Learn how to [create templates](https://attio.com/help/reference/managing-your-data/create-record-and-list-entry-templates) (available on Pro and Enterprise plans).

Rules are a separate way to enforce data quality on records. A rule blocks a change when the record matches a condition you set and an attribute doesn't meet the rule's requirement. Learn more about [creating and managing rules](https://attio.com/help/reference/managing-your-data/objects/create-and-manage-rules).

## FAQ

### What are the differences between Attio's People and Users objects?

**People records** are a complete library of every human (usually represented by an email address) that your company has interacted with. Most person records are created automatically through Attio's email and calendar sync, which creates people for anyone you've ever emailed or had a calendar event with. Customers also create people records when they receive leads (e.g. via an inbound form or when purchasing a lead list), create users records (see below), or import data from other communication tools beyond email.

**Users records **is useful for tracking information about the users of a product, including the person and workspace records they are connected to. It includes the following attributes: ID, Primary email address, Person, Workspace, List Entries, and Next due task. Common custom User attributes include product-usage information like User type (e.g. admin vs standard user), status (active/inactive), and usage history (e.g. number of log ins in the last 30 days). When creating a user record, we recommend linking it to a person record (and creating the person record if necessary) so that you can tie together your communication history available on the person record to the user information available on the user record.

Additionally, there are differences in functionality available for People and Users:

- You can send [emails to People](https://attio.com/help/reference/email-calendar/send-emails-in-attio), but not to Users.
- Each person record has an **Emails** tab showing all email correspondence for synced mailboxes, but user records don't show emails.
- Person records have [communication intelligence attributes](https://attio.com/help/reference/managing-your-data/enriched-data#communication-intelligence) such as "Last interaction", and users do not.
- Person records have [enriched attributes](https://attio.com/help/reference/managing-your-data/enriched-data#enriched-object-attributes) such as social media links, location, description, etc., and users do not.
- Person records are [automatically created](https://attio.com/help/reference/email-calendar/email-and-calendar-syncing#automatic-record-creation) via email and calendar sync, and users are not.

### Should I use the Deals object or a Sales list of companies for my deal flow pipeline?

For simple sales processes, using the Sales list (available as a [list template](https://attio.com/help/reference/managing-your-data/lists/create-lists#use-a-template)) is an easy way to get started. If you're looking for a more robust, scalable solution, we'd recommend using the [Deals object](https://attio.com/help/reference/managing-your-data/objects#deals-standard-object). Check out [this video](https://www.loom.com/share/edadd316a47c43989b224153dc41e282?t=0) for a walkthrough of Deals vs. Sales lists.

The key difference between the Deals object and a Sales list of companies is that a deal record can be your central source of truth for notes, tasks, and attribute values related to that deal. In addition, with deals you can use [relationship attributes](https://attio.com/help/reference/managing-your-data/attributes#relationship-attributes) to link them to records of other objects like people, companies, etc., and you can [customize record pages](https://attio.com/help/reference/managing-your-data/records/configure-record-pages) to show the relevant data in a format that makes most sense for your team.

The same cannot be said of entries in a companies list. You can store deal-related information in a company record, but if multiple teams will use companies, that record could become cluttered quickly. A sales person will want to easily see the information that's relevant to them for a specific deal that is in progress, which is easier with Deals, especially if there may be more than one deal in progress with a single company.

### Can I delete a system attribute?

System attributes cannot be deleted. Admins can [customize what is shown on record pages](https://attio.com/help/reference/managing-your-data/records/configure-record-pages) to highlight attributes that are most relevant to you. Admins can also [change the order of the attributes](https://attio.com/help/reference/managing-your-data/attributes/create-manage-attributes#reorder-attributes) to put the least relevant at the bottom from attribute settings.

### How can I associate one person with multiple companies?

The Company attribute on the People object represents a person’s current primary employment, so only one company can be stored there at a time.

If you want to show that a person has relationships with multiple companies, you can [create a relationship attribute](https://attio.com/help/reference/managing-your-data/attributes/relationship-attributes) that links people and companies. For example:

- Add a relationship attribute called **Linked companies** on the People object.
- Add the corresponding **Linked people** attribute on the Companies object.

Once set up, linking a company to a person in this relationship will automatically display the connection on both sides.
